The NCOLCTL invites you to attend a Pre-Conference Workshop in Madison, Wisconsin. This workshop is a great opportunity provided for all NCOLCTL members free of charge at the 8 th NCOLCTL conference. You are also invited to attend a reception, which will be held after the Pre-Conference Workshop, from 5:30 to 8:00 PM. The Pre-Conference Workshop and the Reception are sponsored by the National African Language Resource Center.
Thursday, April 14, 2004,
1:30 – 5:30 p.m.
Often we are given the task to teach an LCT language in a college simply because of the demand. This workshop will focus on how to establish a language program in the U.S. higher educational institutes with results in mind. Language teaching methods, approach, and materials should be determined with the overall results of the students’ skills and interest in mind rather than some practices where the methods, approach, and materials dictate the program. Discussion will be centered on what kind of language program should we envision and establish before we begin teaching the first year of non-Indo-European language class. Much of the discussion will be based on the experiences and observations I have made in the profession especially dealing with the Japanese language programs in this country.
