Visiting Lecturer in Zulu

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
(UIUC) invites applications for a three-year visiting Lecturer in Zulu beginning August 16, 2008.  The position is renewable beyond three years contingent on funding and periodic satisfactory performance reviews.  We seek a candidate who is able to teach Zulu language courses at all levels and willing to participate in a full range of Zulu language program activities.

Required are a Ph.D. degree (or ABD) in Zulu language pedagogy, second language acquisition, linguistics, or a related field, experience teaching Zulu at the university level, and high proficiency in both Zulu and English.  Experience with Zulu language teaching materials development, especially those involving computer-based instructional technologies, is preferred.

Deputy Director of Language Testing

DynCorp International and McNeil Technologies have combined their core competencies to form a new company — Global Linguist Solutions, (GLS). GLS will offer the U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command’s (INSCOM) Linguist Program an innovative management services solution.

Manage Global Linguist Solution’s (GLS) language proficiency and technical testing program. Direct the multi-functional testing teams that manage language proficiency and technical testing of linguists (translators and interpreters) in support of a military linguist services contract at the Program Management Office (PMO) level. This position reports to the Director of Recruitment Operations.

Principle Responsibilities of the Position:

Responsible for management and oversight of English and foreign language proficiency and technical testing support for a variety of linguist positions and languages at all career levels.
Manage the testing program that includes: testing operations, plans, policies, procedures and resource management to meet corporate, contractual and other requirements; ensure compliance with company regulations and various employment laws.
Serve as the primary Subject Matter Expert (SME) that supervises training, Quality Control and oversight of all testing staff and the Test Control Officers (TCO).
Manage a staff of testing personnel.
Responsible for management of out-sourced language proficiency and technical testing services.
Responsible for budget planning and management.
Maintains necessary liaison and coordination with staff at various locations.
Manages testing data and other metrics for reports.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Education Required: Bachelor’s degree in foreign language acquisition, teaching, translation or interpretation, teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) or related field. Masters degree or PhD preferred.

Experience Required: Seven (7) or more years of experience in proficiency-based foreign language or ESL training and general/technical/linguist assessment/testing.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA):
Proven ability to manage a large language testing program.
Experience in administering, developing and managing testing programs that utilize the ILR proficiency skill level descriptions as a basis for assessment.
Demonstrated strong project management skills for complex projects with a large number of concurrent tasks involving multiple teams. Must possess demonstrated ability to work well under pressure to meet critical deadlines yet remain flexible in responding to changing requirements. Must have the ability to interface effectively and work with all levels of staff and management. Ability to prepare and present high quality briefings. Ability to use MS Office software.

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA):
Experience with the entire life cycle of language and technical testing to include: development, administration, grading and safeguarding of materials.
Experience in administering, developing and managing testing programs that utilize the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) proficiency skill level descriptions.
Ability to manage a high-volume of test requirements while maintaining flexibility, professionalism and adhering to relevant policies and procedures.

Director of the Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures (CSLC)


The College of Arts and Letters at the University of Notre Dame is creating a new Center whose mission is to advance language learning and the understanding of world cultures. The Director will play a leading role in enhancing teaching and assessment practices, building upon the achievements of individual language programs, and facilitating the discussion of issues vital to the teaching of language and culture. The Director will also participate in the final planning and implementation of the CSLC; collaborate with departments, centers, and institutes involved in the study of language and culture across campus; promote the professional development of faculty and graduate students; provide support for less commonly taught languages; expand undergraduate peer tutoring; and represent the University at academic and professional conferences. The teaching load is expected to be one course per year beginning in the second year.

 Ph.D. (in hand by time of appointment) in a language, Second Language Acquisition, or a related field; native or near-native fluency in a language other than English; training or experience in SLA and pedagogy; and previous experience in administration and classroom language teaching required. Experience in grant writing and training in instructional technology preferred. Twelve-month faculty appointment, 3-5 year term, indefinitely renewable pending favorable reviews; begins July 1, 2008. The National Foreign Language Center (NFLC) is a research institute of the University of Maryland dedicated to promoting a language-competent America by developing and disseminating information that informs policy makers. NFLC is looking for a F aculty Research Assistant in Quality Assurance.

Job Summary:

The position’s primary focus will be on the quality assurance of processes and products related to sponsored research projects at the NFLC. Specifically the position will be responsible for the design and implementation of the Center’s policies and procedures to ensure that the project’s quality standards are met during production. This position will oversee the testing of production processes and products prior to delivery to the sponsor.

Specifically the Assistant will: carry out an initial review of the Center’s existing approaches to QA by documenting and assessing their effectiveness, make recommendations to the Center’s director, project technical leads and project managers on an ongoing basis regarding ways to improve quality assurance, and alert them quickly to any major concerns, develop and nurture a collegial, team approach to quality assurance which will consistently assure that the Center’s full project staff participate in and recognize their role in the quality assurance process, report promptly to the Director any issues likely to affect the quality of target outcomes of the Center’s sponsored projects; outcomes to broadly include all “deliverables” of sponsored programs, including products such as multimedia, training, outreach programs and internal initiatives, identify and recommend additional expertise or external resources to be consulted and additional training which may be required to guarantee the quality assurance of the Center’s sponsored projects, set up a standard protocol for monitoring and reporting on any quality assurance matters for all sponsored programs, and provide a routine report to the Center’s director on QA-related matters for all sponsored projects, perform a variety of tasks as assigned and as determined by the Center’s sponsored projects’ need; lead and direct the work of

Position Description

The Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) seeks a full-time director.  CARLA is one of the U.S. Department of Education’s Title VI National Language Resource Centers, whose role is to improve the nation's capacity to teach and learn foreign languages effectively. CARLA is engaged in a number of interrelated research and program initiatives focused on second/foreign language teaching, learning, and assessment.  Through an annual summer institute program and a wide array of international conferences and regional seminars, CARLA supports the professional development of language teachers.  Additionally, CARLA offers a number of resources to language teachers including a battery of language proficiency assessments and a working paper series. The mission of CARLA is to study multilingualism and multiculturalism, to develop knowledge of second language acquisition, and to advance the quality of language teaching, learning, and assessment.General Duties of the CARLA Director: As the public face of CARLA, the director will provide leadership by setting priorities and direction for this interdisciplinary, research-based center, securing and expanding funding, and fostering collaboration among all CARLA stakeholders.  This is a full-time, annually renewable administrative position that may include limited teaching and research options depending upon the needs of CARLA and the background of the individual.  For the successful candidate, exceptional circumstances may warrant the granting of faculty rank and the possibility of faculty tenure.Specific Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership and vision, and foster the development of effective team relationships within CARLA. Maintain and expand funding sources, lead grant-writing efforts and gift campaigns, and foster collaborations to pursue funding opportunities. Recruit and support project leaders, Center Coordinator and other personnel; monitor project and product development; supervise Center personnel. Create and strengthen connections linking CARLA with all relevant units within the University and the state, and with national and international researchers, leaders, and institutions engaged in language education. Provide budgetary oversight and decision-making for CARLA resources. Maintain effective communication with Principal Investigators of all CARLA grants.
  • Establish and implement a new leadership model in consultation with CARLA stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in a relevant field. Demonstrated scholarship and background and experience in language education. Knowledge about key national and international issues related to language and culture education.
  • Documented evidence of management ability, organizational and interpersonal skills, and strong public relations skills.
Preferred Qualifications 
  • Demonstrated success in writing, procuring, and managing grants. Demonstrated interdisciplinary teambuilding success in academic and/or non-academic settings.
  • Demonstrated leadership and professional involvement in language and culture education.
