General Purpose:
Under the direction of the Associate Director for Language Education and research, plan, create and manage the administrative, programmatic, and pedagogical functions for the specialized language initiatives of the Center for Language Study, such as the Directed Independent Language Study (DILS) program, the FIELDS program, Languages for Specific Purposes, Tutoring Program, and Faculty Development Programs such as Travel Grants.   Design and implement independent and interdisciplinary programs for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students that supplement and enhance existing course offerings.  Serve as the primary liaison with other Yale departments, residential colleges, professional organizations, faculty, staff, students, and visitors.
 
Essential Duties: 
1.       Recommend and develop long-range plans and operational framework for DILS, FIELDS, and discipline-specific language programs for undergraduate, graduate and professional school students, staff, and faculty.
2.       Develop procedures and implement policies governing the administration of CLS special language initiatives in collaboration with Yale College, Graduate & Professional Schools; Research and advise Associate Director of new program opportunities and initiatives; identify financial, pedagogical and administrative resources to support programmatic goals.
3.       Establish pedagogical guidelines and monitor the administration for language tutoring program and travel grants.
4.       Supervisor program staff.
5.       Create program application and selection procedures and develop guidelines and timelines Targeted toward specific program objectives.
6.       Working with technology specialists, develop and identify materials and resources for language instruction.
7.       Hire, train, and supervise instructors and language partners.  Establish standards and guidelines for program oversight and evaluation and oversee professional development of instructors.
8.       Develop and implement new curricula; establish testing and assessment procedures; monitor student progress and create and maintain student records.
9.       Create and oversee foreign language examination process and procedures for students who wish to demonstrate native language competency toward completion of the Foreign Language Requirement in consultation with Yale College Dean’s Office and the Registrar’s Office; reporting as appropriate to individual Yale departments, residential colleges and schools.
10.   Collect and analyze program, testing, enrollment and other relevant data; prepare oral and written reports for relevant Yale Departments and other administrative units.
11.   Attend (and, when appropriate, present at) professional conferences on specialized and interdisciplinary language programs and on the less commonly taught languages (LCTLs).
 
Education/Experience: 
1.       Advanced Degree
2.       Ph.D. or equivalent level degree in Second Language Acquisition, Applied Linguistics or related field, or equivalent combination of experience and education.
 
Skills & Abilities: 
1.       Demonstrated interest in curricular innovation, especially outside traditional course structures and for non-traditional learners.
2.       Experience with less commonly taught languages (LCTLs)

Hindi Language Lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania

The Department of South Asia Studies at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a one-year Lecturer in Hindi language for the academic year 2008-2009. Hindi-Urdu Lecturer at the University of British Columbia

The Department of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia is accepting applications for one 12-month lecturer position (1 year contract with possibility of renewal) in Hindi-Urdu language for the academic year 2008W, commencing September 1, 2008 and ending August 31, 2009. The successful applicant will teach a minimum 12 credits of Hindi at the first and second year level plus an additional 12 credits of Hindi language, Urdu, Sanskrit or Indian Film.

Punjabi Lecturer at The University of British Columbia

Manage Global Linguist Solution’s (GLS) language proficiency and technical testing program. Direct the multi-functional testing teams that manage language proficiency and technical testing of linguists (translators and interpreters) in support of a military linguist services contract at the Program Management Office (PMO) level. This position reports to the Director of Recruitment Operations.

Principle Responsibilities of the Position:

Responsible for management and oversight of English and foreign language proficiency and technical testing support for a variety of linguist positions and languages at all career levels.
Manage the testing program that includes: testing operations, plans, policies, procedures and resource management to meet corporate, contractual and other requirements; ensure compliance with company regulations and various employment laws.
Serve as the primary Subject Matter Expert (SME) that supervises training, Quality Control and oversight of all testing staff and the Test Control Officers (TCO).
Manage a staff of testing personnel.
Responsible for management of out-sourced language proficiency and technical testing services.
Responsible for budget planning and management.
Maintains necessary liaison and coordination with staff at various locations.
Manages testing data and other metrics for reports.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Education Required: Bachelor’s degree in foreign language acquisition, teaching, translation or interpretation, teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) or related field. Masters degree or PhD preferred.

Experience Required: Seven (7) or more years of experience in proficiency-based foreign language or ESL training and general/technical/linguist assessment/testing.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA):
Proven ability to manage a large language testing program.
Experience in administering, developing and managing testing programs that utilize the ILR proficiency skill level descriptions as a basis for assessment.
Demonstrated strong project management skills for complex projects with a large number of concurrent tasks involving multiple teams. Must possess demonstrated ability to work well under pressure to meet critical deadlines yet remain flexible in responding to changing requirements. Job Summary:

The position’s primary focus will be on the quality assurance of processes and products related to sponsored research projects at the NFLC. Position Description

The Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) seeks a full-time director.  CARLA is one of the U.S. Department of Education’s Title VI National Language Resource Centers, whose role is to improve the nation's capacity to teach and learn foreign languages effectively. CARLA is engaged in a number of interrelated research and program initiatives focused on second/foreign language teaching, learning, and assessment.  Through an annual summer institute program and a wide array of international conferences and regional seminars, CARLA supports the professional development of language teachers.  Additionally, CARLA offers a number of resources to language teachers including a battery of language proficiency assessments and a working paper series. The mission of CARLA is to study multilingualism and multiculturalism, to develop knowledge of second language acquisition, and to advance the quality of language teaching, learning, and assessment.General Duties of the CARLA Director: As the public face of CARLA, the director will provide leadership by setting priorities and direction for this interdisciplinary, research-based center, securing and expanding funding, and fostering collaboration among all CARLA stakeholders.  This is a full-time, annually renewable administrative position that may include limited teaching and research options depending upon the needs of CARLA and the background of the individual.  For the successful candidate, exceptional circumstances may warrant the granting of faculty rank and the possibility of faculty tenure.Specific Responsibilities

Faculty Associate

The Department of African Languages and Literature, College of Letters and Science, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has a position for a full-time Faculty Associate (Assistant, Associate, or no prefix), depending on experience. This position requires teaching two sections of Yoruba language courses (i.e., Fall: AF 669-Fifth and Seventh-Semester Intensive Yoruba Language and Culture, Spring: AF 669-Sixth and Eighth-Semesters Intensive Yoruba Language and Culture) and supervise all (Teaching Assistant (TA) -taught Yoruba courses (i.e., Fall: AF 371-First Semester Yoruba (Lecture 1 and 2); AF 373-Third Semester Yoruba; and AF 475-Fifth Semester Yoruba; Spring: AF 372-Second Semester Yoruba (Lecture 1 and 2), AF 374-Fourth Semester Yoruba, and AF 476-Sixth Semester Yoruba).

Supervision of courses entails (a) determination of the instructional syllabus and specific lesson plans; (b) periodical visits to the TA -taught classes and individual follow-up evaluations; (c) conducting regularly scheduled meetings with TAs to discuss pedagogical and administrative issues; (d) scheduling peer visitations among Yoruba TAs and instructors from other language

Programs; and (e) arranging for the video-taping of TA-taught classes for peer review and discussion. Assistance will be provided by course professor to help to advance the development of a communicative approach in the teaching of Yoruba.

Minimum of Master’s degree in African Languages and Literature required. Final approval of an appointment is contingent on funding. Minimum of two years teaching experience at the beginning and/or intermediate levels of Yoruba language at the college/university level required; some advanced Yoruba language teaching at the college/university level preferred.
