has working relationships with several institutions that are important
to bundling and strengthening the field of less commonly taught
languages. Because of the importance of these institutions to the
Council, its membership, and the field, the Council is pleased to
provide summary information about these organizations and convenient

you to learn more. These institutions are listed below and will
be periodically updated as new organizations are established and
institutional missions change.

ACTFL
Recently established a website at their own domain. The site promises
to offer a number of services, including: a downloadable library,
publications order forms, information on how to publish through
ACTFL, meetings information, and more.


Center
for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA)
Hosts a website that contains general information on the LCTL Project
at the University of Minnesota, an LCTL database, information on
LCTL Project sponsored listservs, and links and addresses to other
LCTL resources. Included in the database is the ability to find
out where a specific LCTL is taught.


Center for Applied Linguistics
A private, non-profit organization dedicated to applying research
and information about language and culture to foreign language education.

Computerized
Assisted Language Learning
At the University of California, Berkeley, offers reviews of software
and books for language students and language instructors. The site
also contains job announcements, product announcements, and demos.


FLTeaching
Forum
Includes a listserv for FL educators to discuss various aspects
of foreign language teaching. All postings are archived in a database
which allows the user to search for messages by entering the author,
date, subject thread, and/or key words.


Language
and Language Learning (in Queensland,
Australia)
Provides information on specific languages as well as information
on languages in general and related topics in language teaching
and learning.


The Language Materials Project
(LMP)
At the University of California, Los Angeles, offers a web accessible
database containing more than 11,000 citations covering over 900
languages. The database provides bibliographic references for language
teaching materials for the LCTLs. The database also contains linguistic
profiles, including geographical distributions of the language and
a three to four page description of key dialects, grammatical features,
and a historical background.


The Library of Congress
Allows the user to search and browse the Libraryís index
and non-catalog file (e.g. for records for federal legislation,
audio and foreign law), using a variety of tools. Some of the records
have direct links to digitized materials.


LingNet
Located at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center
in Monterey, CA, offers its members a variety of tools and materials,
including: discussion forums, software libraries, reading material
and mailing lists. An on-line application for free membership to
is available at the LingNet site.


The National Clearinghouse
for English Language Acquisition (NCELA)
This website provides information to help state and local school
districts to improve academic standards, including those in foreign
language programs. The NCELA is funded by the Department of Education
and operated by George Washington University.


SCOLA
This website contains programming schedules, transcriptions of some
of the foreign language broadcasts and other information -- including
information on SCOLA which provides foreign television programming
for language learning.


Summer Institute of Linguistics
(SIL)
Located at the International Linguistics Center in Dallas, Texas.
The SIL website contains information on the study of minority languages
and cultures. The academic domains represented include: linguistics,
anthropology, translation literacy, language learning, and computing.

Yamada WWW Language Guides
Housed at the University of Oregon, contains an exhaustive list
of language resources on the Web.


The International Association of Language Learning Technology
(IALL) is devoted to language learning technology. The majority
of its members are language lab directories from various institutions
across the U.S.

Demonstrations of Language Line Services: interpreting
services (via telephone) for 140 different languages; the site also
contains application information on how to become a Language Line
interpreter.

Fulbright Teacher
and Administrator Exchange Program
This program is open to educators from the elementary, secondary
and two-year college levels. Sponsored by the United States Department
of State, it allows for U.S. teachers to exchange
teaching positions with educators in over 30 countries. Administrators
can participate in six-week shadowing experiences in about nine
countries.
